SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY-The flood protection project along Albright avenue was completed years ago, in what was supposed to be a coordinated effort for other parts of the city.
But residents in those sections still wait for protection from the Lackawanna river, the patience running dry.
Congressman Paul Kanjorski told homeowners in the plot and greenridge neighborhoods they don't have the best odds.
After all, the area has been dogged by several floods in only a matter of years.
Monday night, a new time line released doesn't set the completion of a flood protection project for the Greenridge section until September 2009.
Bob Gavern, of Scranton says " We were promised it would be done by this year and of course everything changes."
Standards within the army corps of engineers have changed, thanks to lessons learned from failed levees in Hurricane Katrina increasing project times here in Scranton.
Homeowner Dan Hubbard came armed with questions for leaders.
He wants to know why new floods are happening in parts of the city that never had problems.
Daniel Hubbard, of the lower Greenridge Neighborhood Association, said
"Up until the 2004 flood, our immediate neighborhood never had a drop of water in it, so our patience are done."
Congressman Kanjorksi says a study is underway to determine if past projects done by the Army Corps of engineers have contributed to new flooding in Scranton.
Mayor Chris Doherty doesn't doubt it.
"The truth is they didn't have flooding ten years, and now they do.
And the other reality is, when we're done here, i think we're going to see the same thing down the line."
Residents who live outside the scope of flood protection want to know what will be done if another flood happens.
They're hoping for temporary fixes, though none were outlined tonight.
They're just praying a flood event doesn't happen before September 2009. | |
