Scranton Man Sentenced for Baseball Bat Attack - Friday, October 2, 2009 at 6:17PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - A Scranton man is going to prison for a brutal baseball bat attack last year. Ronald Clark was sentenced Friday morning in Lackawanna County court. Police say he attacked his former girlfriend and her five-year-old son.

Clark was sentenced to between 8 and 20 years in prison. The attack happened inside a Boulevard Avenue home in May 2008.

"This is probably one of the most brutal attacks on a domestic violence victim that I have seen in quite some time. I think the sentence was totally appropriate," deputy district attorney Gene Riccardo said.

Riccardo says Clark's then-girlfriend Leandra Portonova was beaten from head-to-toe. Portonova suffered a broken leg and ankle. Her head was also cut open. Her five-year-old son was also attacked as well. He was hit in the head.

"The victim and her son -- this will forever be impacted on their lives and I don't think it's something you just put in the past," Riccardo said.

After the sentencing, Clark's attorney didn't want to comment about the case on camera. Inside the courtroom, he blamed part of the attack on drugs and alcohol.

Prosecutors say Clark also had another motive.

"He was coming home from a domestic violence program and I think that was the thing that iniatied the argument which iniatied the assault," Riccardo said.

In court, Clark maintained his innocence on Friday. He did so even when the judge asked him twice. Clark already says he'll appeal the sentence.

"He's taken no responsibility, so for him to avoid the process, he's gonna try to keep this process going as long as he can," Riccardo said.

Portonova declined to comment after Friday's sentencing. She also did not address the judge.

When released from prison, Clark will also have to serve four years probation.
