SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Scranton mayor Chris Doherty has named Sam Schiavone and Andrea Talarico as co-directors for First Night, the city's annual New Year's Eve celebration.
First Night marked its tenth year on New Year's Eve. But it was the last year for the civic group 'Scranton Tomorrow' to plan and organize the event.
Mayor Doherty praised Scranton Tomorrow for its work on the project. He said the event is important to the city and should continue.
The mayor said it takes approximately $100,000 to hold First Night. He said the city will sponsor the event this year as it has in the past. The mayor said he would lead an effort to attract business sponsors to help cover the costs.
There have already been some preliminary discussions on proposed changes to First Night. Events could be centered on Courthouse Square rather than scattered throughout the downtown. And there has been some talk about the possibility of setting up heated tents around the square to hold some of the events and counter bad weather like the cold temperatures that cut attendance at this year's First Night celebration.
Planning will begin immediately since some efforts, like booking artists to perform on First Night, is time sensitive.
WYOU will again be a media sponsor for First Night in Scranton this year.
