((SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY) –

A National Guardsman from Scranton was laid to rest Tuesday morning, after he died last week in Afghanistan.

Specialist Jonathon Luscher enrolled in the Army before he graduated from Scranton High School. Jonathon Luscher would not return from his first tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Army Chaplain, "Remember him always as someone who stood up against the evil and wickedness of the world." The National Guardsman from Scranton died August 17th from a non-combat injury overseas. As the army investigates, his family tries to heal their broken hearts.

Jessica Knight is Luscher’s first cousin, "The immediate family is devastated. We're being as strong as we can be, but it's not an easy situation."

Dozens of mourners filed in to Scranton High School to pay their final respects. It was here; Jonathon Luscher graduated in 2006 and also enrolled in the military. Thomas Kane is also a first cousin, "He (Luscher) enlisted while I was in Iraq myself and one of the proudest things he's ever done in his life was putting on the military uniform."

It was here, he also earned several medals for his dedication and service to country. The Pennsylvania Meritorious Service Medal was also awarded to Jonathon Luscher."

Luscher loved life. Friends, family and members of the community say his memory will live on. Kane added, "We just all hope Jonathan realized how much he is missed and was loved and is loved to this day."

Patrick O’Malley is a member of Scranton’s School Board, "It's just a horrible situation. You know, it's bad enough to lose a child, but he was defending our rights." Three motorcycle groups came to pay their respects, too. “Ziggy” rides with Pennsylvania's Patriot Guard.

Ziggy told Eyewitness News, "I cried over it. He's not even legal to drink and he went right over there after high school, like I did and did his part. And I give him big thumbs up and a hug to the family"

Specialist Luscher was laid to rest with full military honors at the Jermyn cemetery.
