SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - The public safety director position in the city of Scranton will soon be a thing of the past. Ray Hayes, who is the current public safety director, says he plans to leave the post at the end of the year.

Hayes says the decision was made on his own. He has served in the job for the last eight years.

"I'm going to be devoting more of my time to teaching and hoping to go back to full-time teaching," Hayes said.

In his role as public safety director, Hayes oversaw the city's police and fire departments. He also did long-range planning for the city.

"I'm a very action-oriented person and although I never really relished getting up at 3:00 AM, I did enjoy being out there where the action was," Hayes said.

Hayes says one of his proudest moments was dedicating a new city police headquarters in 2005. He's a former police officer himself.

"I believe that was a great first step in restoring some of the pride for the police department," Hayes said.

Tuesday night, city council decided not to fund the public safety position when Hayes leaves his post. Hayes does not think city services will suffer.

"Scranton 2009 is not Scranton 2002. Back then there was a lot of heavy lifting that had to be done at that time," Hayes said.

People in the public agree. They say the right management team is in place in both the fire and police departments respectively.

"They're run by good people. I've oftentimes thought the director of public safety seemed like an unnecessary position in a city this size," James Pidgeon of Scranton said.

Hayes expects his duties to be taken over by various other city officials.
