SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - Three shooting suspects got a surprise when they showed up at court Wednesday morning in Lackawanna County. They were slapped with new charges by federal officials.

Ernest Parker, April Pleasants and Demario White came from North Carolina to Scranton to face charges aggravated and simple assault charges in county court. That's when everything changed. Instead of facing a preliminary hearing, they were hauled off by federal agents.

"When we saw the FBI agents in the Lackawanna County courthouse, I assumed there was a possibility of a federal indictment and that's what happened," Joseph Kalinowski said. Kalinowski is the defense lawyer for Ernest Parker.

All three suspects were immediately taken to the federal courthouse in Scranton. Later in the day, they were all arraigned in Wilkes-Barre on federal kidnapping and firearms charges.

"All it is -- is the same game -- just a different stadium and going forward, we're just gonna have to focus in on is the new charges," defense attorney Bernie Brown said. Brown is representing Demario White.

The charges all ste from a shooting behind the Robo Car Wash in Scranton in late June. By charging the suspects in federal court, all of the suspects face much stiffer penalties.

"In the aggravated assaults, F1 felonies, they were talking "years" and as you heard today (in court), they're talking about the possibility of life in prison," Brown said.

All three suspects have pleaded not guilty to the new charges.

"We're in the very early stages of the case. We'll take it day-by-day and see what happens," Kalinowski said.

All three suspects will have a detention hearing Thursday morning in Wilkes-Barre. That will determine if they stay behind bars. Jury selection in their trial is currently set for October 26.
