Scranton Single Tax Office Audit Released
Scranton Single Tax Office Audit Released - Friday, March 20, 2009 at 10:51AM EST
SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Auditors say Scranton's Single Tax Office failed to properly account for and remit various types of tax collections on a timely basis. That, they say, is what resulted in the discovery of over $12 million dollars last year in an account that should have carried a zero balance.
The investigative audit, released Friday morning, determined that the accumulated funds included over-payments of real estate taxes and non-resident earned income tax receipts beginning no later that 1998 and continuing through the present.
Auditors say distribution of the accumulated funds is hampered by several factors including the extended period during which the money was accumulated and what they call "apparent inaccuracies in some Single Tax Office accounting records."
The audit report indicates the Single Tax Office can consider distribution of $4,317,563 which represents the total excess funds less $654,033 of unreimbursed real estate tax over-payments. | |
