Scranton State School for the Deaf Victorious On the Court

Scranton State School for the Deaf Victorious On the Court - Friday, February 27, 2009 at 12:11PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Faced with a bundle of challenges, the Scranton State School For The Deaf brushed away distraction and advanced in a multiple-state basketball tournament. The Bears defeated the Delaware Blue Hawks 40 to 38 Thursday night in front of a packed house at Johnson College. The team is two wins from capturing the league's championship. Their success comes at a difficult time for the 129-year-old school.
Governor Ed Rendell's budget proposal does not include funding for the operation beyond this school year. The state has said it wants to get of the business of operating a school. News of the budget gap has drawn fierce criticism from supporters of the Scranton School and others. Area lawmakers have pledged support for the program and have acknowledged funding will be found. No formal plans have been announced.

A rally is planned for Saturday at 11 a. m. at the school.
