SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY
For the tenth straight year the city of Scranton will welcome in the new year with it's "First Night' celebration.
Mayor Chris Doherty says the event, which features music, entertainers, fireworks, and amusement rides on Courthouse Square, brings between 10 to 15,000 people to downtown Scranton each year. People purchase buttons which admit them to all of the events and attractions. The mayor says First Night has become a major event in the city. That's why we wants to see it continue after Scranton Tomorrow, the group which organizes First Night, ends its participation after this year's event.
Mayor Doherty says he has already asked past chair people for First Night to act as a oversight committee when the city itself takes over the event next year, He says they have agreed to do so. | | |
