Scranton's Holy Cross High To Close - Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 12:01PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- The Scranton campus of Holy Cross High School will shut its doors, closing a rich chapter of Catholic education in the shadow of St. Peter Cathedral. The school is known as a flagship model of Catholic education on the local scene, with its location just feet from the Bishop's residence and the Chancery, where the church's government offices are housed.

Last year, Holy Cross-Scranton shed its long-held name Bishop Hannon High School under a sweeping streamlining plan that covered most of the 11-county diocese. Catholic leaders said the closure of Holy Cross is linked to a precarious church budget, given uncertain economic conditions.

Students will move up to the Dunmore Holy Cross campus. Leaders say there's ample space for the flux of incoming students.
