A store with a long run of helping others will close its doors.

The Salvation Army thrift store in south Scranton is slated to close April 15th.

Since the 50's, the Salvation Army thrift store on Washington Avenue in Scranton has been the place to get a good buy.

Dawn Miller of Scranton says, "It's great savings, especially now with the recession going on and everyone losing jobs, it's great."

But now shoppers like Miller will have to buy discounted clothes and more somewhere else.

A downturn in donations is causing this store to close.

Miller says she is, “Very disappointed, yeah. I love this place. I come here all the time."

Store employee Faith Andrejack is also disappointed.

She’s worked there for 20 years.

"Devastation. I was like, it can't be happening, not for the mother store," says Andrejack.

Andrejack calls this place the "mother store" because it's helped so many people.

She says it's rebuilt needy families, some who have lost everything in fires or other disasters.

It's also helped people at the neighboring Salvation Army rehabilitation center get back on their feet.

"The feeling at the end of the day when you lay your head down on the pillow that you've done so much for somebody for someone that means so much is a good, good feeling," says Andrejack.

The Salvation Army hopes that good feeling can be passed on to elsewhere.

Most of the goods at the South Washington store will be brought to the thrift store on River Street .

Andrejack hopes some of the workers back at the store closing will be able to keep helping the Salvation Army.

“Probably the old roots will sooner or later sprout into new flowers, so we'll be alright," says Andrejack.

Alright after a store with so much history reaches its final chapter.

The goods at the South Washington Avenue store will also be taken to stores in Enyon, Tunkhannock and Stroudsburg.
