MIDDLE SMITHFIELD TWP., MONROE COUNTY -- Police in the Poconos are still searching for a man who got away during a traffic stop last night.

Police pulled a car over on Route 209 Monday night near Milford Manor. As part of the stop, police were allowed to search the vehicle. The passenger in the car, 24-year-old Corey Johnson, struggled with police when they discovered he had a gun. Police say Johnson assaulted an officer and took off running.

Stroud Area Regional Police have joined with state police and a PSP helicopter to look for Johnson. The search is focused in the area of Lower Lakeview Drive and Municipal Drive after a township employee says he spotted Johnson near the municipal building.

Police say Johnson is armed and dangerous. He's a white man with brown hair and a full beard. He was last seen wearing a dark jacket and gray sweatpants.

Municipal buildings in the search area are on lockdown and Middle Smithfield Elementary is being watched by state troopers.
