Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County -
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says Pennsylvania drivers are among the best in the country at wearing safety belts. It is giving our state a grant of $28.6 million because of our performance.
However, State Police say some people are still not getting the message in our area. Over the past three years there have been more than 33 fatal accidents and 20 of those were from people not wearing their safety belts. State Police point to an accident last year on Interstate 81 in Hanover Township as an example. A seven month old baby was not strapped in and was killed.
The national grant will be used for safety programs like safe driver classes and bike and motorcycle safety courses.
