Second 'home' windmill goes up in Scott Township - Monday, December 15, 2008 at 3:29PM EST

SCOTT TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY

Another Scott Township family is turning to wind power in an effort to cut its electric bills.

Harry and Linda Newberry have erected a 33 foot high tower topped by propeller-like blades that run a generator. The windmill is expected to provide about 70 to 75% of the power it takes to run the house.

The unit was purchased from Backyard Windmills LLC. It is specifically designed for residential use and can operate in winds of 8 miles per hour or higher.

A larger unit was put into service at the Dennis family home in Scott Township earlier this year.

Mark Kohn of Backyard Windmills LLC said home windmill units are becoming more advanced and efficient. He said the demand for such units has been growing because of economic conditions and rising energy costs.
