SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- A U. S. District Judge from our area is moving up to a higher court today.

Thomas Vanaskie will be sworn into to the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Vanaskie is a native of Shamokin and now lives in Clarks Green.

He was confirmed last month. The appeals court is below only the Supreme Court.

Security is tight around the federal courthouse in downtown Scranton for the 12:30 swearing in ceremony.

Vanaskie's big move comes the same day President Obama formally nominated Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the U. S. Supreme Court.
