Sexual Assualt Charges Added to Animal Abuse Case

Sexual Assualt Charges Added to Animal Abuse Case - Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 04:07AM EST

Thursday April 08 2010
MAIN TWP., COLUMBIA COUNTY -- A horrific case of animal abuse takes another turn in Columbia County. A man, arrested for having sex with animals, is now charged with sexually assaulting a teenager.

The investigation into Curtis Armstrong of Main Township makes his neighbors cringe. Robert Hayes said, "It's a shock to everyone around here because everybody knows everybody. It wasn't even a joke, really. People are embarrassed around here because they think the old, well over in Mainville all the horse abusers or animal abusers. We don't want that over here."

Hayes and neighbor Kay Pfuntner had no idea what may have happened here at Armstrongs farm down the road from their homes. Over the course of several years police say he sexually abused his own horses and a teenager. Kay Pfuntner said, "Very shocked. To think that that's a neighbor? You just don't know now a days, you just don't know. "

Late last year Armstrong's now estranged wife gave his computer to police. That's where investigators say they found pictures of Armstrong abusing his animals.

His wife also reported Armstrongs alleged sexual relationship with a 15 year old girl from 1996 through 1999. The victim is an adult now but Armstrong can still be charged. Police say at some points, Armstrong would ask the teenager to help him have sex with his animals.

Police also say Armstrong wasn't the only one abusing animals here at his home. Investigators say he brought two men from two different counties to his farm to abuse the animals and take pictures of it.

Armstrong didn't answer our questions Thursday. He posted bail after his hearing. Armstrong was released without bail, but if he gets in trouble before the next court date, he'll have to pay $25,000.

Police say he's not staying at his farm, but instead at a family members home in another county.
