SHAMOKIN, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY- Water woes in Shamokin have nothing to do with the wet weather. An overflowing sink sent water cascading through the Shamokin library for more than 10 hours Monday. But the library was able to save most of its books thanks to some quick thinking.

Librarian Mary Ellen Lowe and a bunch of helpers scrambled Monday to save what they could. When workers came in water was pouring through the light fixtures. If it weren't for some quick thinking and some of these tarps from local businesses, things could have been a whole lot worse. "The water was pouring from our second floor into the first floor through the light fixtures, right on top of 9,600 fiction books," said Lowe.

Luckily only about 150 of those books were ruined. “Books that have been this damaged, there's no way to save them. They are just going to have to be discarded, and we have dried off and saved as many as we could that only have minor water damage,” said Lowe.

The water was coming from a sink above the library. Library President Frank Konopka said, "Someone either inadvertently, or deliberately or through just plain stupidity left a mop in the scrub sink and the water on full blast."

That water ran for nearly 10 hours Sunday night into Monday morning. But just a day later, the library is back open. “Luckily the very expensive things such as the computers, and the research books that children from grade school to high school use have not been affected or the children's section so that's a blessing I suppose," added Konopka.

The library says they'll work as fast as they can to get back to 100%. "We're going to go as fast as we can to replace what we can. A lot of those books are very old and probably cannot be replaced," said Konopka.

About 150 fiction books could not be salvaged. The library expects all of the building damage to be covered by insurance.
