Shamokin Pool Not in Compliance With Federal Law

Shamokin Pool Not in Compliance With Federal Law - Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 3:47PM EST

Shamokin, Northumberland County-

People looking to beat the heat are ready to dive in at a popular swimming spot in Shamokin. But new federal regulations mean the pool could be in trouble before it even opens for the season.

The Lawton Shroyer Memorial Pool is a refreshing summer treat for people in the area.

Roman Scicchitano noted, “A lot of kids from around Shamokin that go to school and everything, they still use the pool, ‘cause when it’s hot there’s really nothing else to do. Go swimming, cool off.”

But a new federal safety regulation says pools across the nation need new anti-entrapment drain covers to protect swimmers.

The federal law is named for Virginia Graeme Baker, who drowned at the age of seven after a powerful suction drain trapped her underwater.

City officials don’t have the money, roughly $100,000, and can’t get the drain covers installed until at least next year.

So the question becomes, should the city allow the pool to open?

Scicchitano said, “It’s still safe to open the pool. I mean, it’s been safe for how long now, however many years they’ve been open, nothing went wrong then. So why close it now?”

Richard Weimer lives across the street from the pool. He explained, “There’s no place anybody can go into a sewer or anything, get caught and pulled under. And it’s handled nicely over there.”

Officials have said they plan to open the pool sometime next week.

The U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the state attorney general are in charge of enforcing the federal statute. No word yet if they would target the pool here in Shamokin, or others not in compliance with the law.

Weimer added, “I think they open the pool. It’s been there for 38 years. We’ve never had a problem. It’s a good pool. It’s well run and I like it.”

We’re told at least two other public pools near Shamokin, in Mount Carmel and Sunbury, are already in compliance with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act.
