Shenandoah Hires 8 New Police Officers - Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 5:55PM EST

SHENANDOAH, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY -- Shenandoah borough is rebuilding its police force after a federal investigation ripped it apart. Eight part time police officers were hired at Monday nights borough meeting.

Ann Colosimo of Shenandoah says it makes her feel safer. "We do need policemen in this town, every town needs a full force of police officers and what happened before, that was a shame," said Colosimo.

Colosimo's talking about four police officers charged with covering up a beating death. Two summers ago, two teens beat up a Mexican immigrant who died days later.

The feds say the charged Shenandoah police officers botched police reports, trying to keep the teens out of trouble. Those officers were fired and are waiting for their trial.

Now, the borough's moving on, replacing them with eight part time officers. The borough manager tells us all the officers have complete background checks and are ready to go. "The hope is to get all these officers in cars like that within the next week," he said.

Some hope the new officers hiring serves as a point to move past this investigation. Carisa Rhoads of Shenandoah said, "We're getting a bad name and we are a nice town, do you know what i mean? It's sad, it's very sad to see what we're getting put through, the media and CNN and everything else.

Until the officers take the streets, state troopers will help patrol the small town. Something they've done since the charged officers were booted from the force.
