WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY- People living in a Wilkes-Barre apartment complex say they are under siege. In just the past couple of months, Sherman Hills has been the scene of a murder, a search for a killer and a police officer assault to name a few. Some residents say they’re afraid to leave their apartment.

The Sherman Hills Apartments are no stranger to crime. But in recent weeks, even people here say they have never seen it so bad. An elderly woman, who was afraid to be identified, did talk with me about the recent spike in crime. She said the good people are afraid to live there now and the bad people don’t care.

Sherman Hills has been ground zero for crime in recent weeks. Aaron Baxter was gunned down in a hallway of one building. Another man, Charles Carter, was wanted for murder in New York City and was found hiding in the same building.

This past weekend a police officer was assaulted and injured and a resident was shot at and attacked. The woman said, “Well one thing that has to be done, stop bringing in the clientele. It’s the clients that bring other people in. That's the main thing right now."

Another resident agrees. He says management does a good job trying to keep out troublemakers, but they can only do so much. “Daniel” said, "It's just too bad. They come and fill out applications. Nice sweet little baby and stuff in my opinion they later bring the boyfriend, maybe drugs with that, friends you know, what I mean bad people hanging around."

Eyewitness News talked to manager Bruce Wallace who really opened up his records to me. He does background checks but often it is the people who visit who cause problems.

Sherman Hills also hires off-duty Wilkes-Barre police officers to patrol every day. He showed me dozens of reports from the police who are stopped in Sherman Hills every week and questioned because they are trespassing.

He is urging residents to get involved. They have to call police or his office if they see or suspect trouble. Wallace also says they are working on a new security plan, but he would not go into detail at this point.
