SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - Owners of a downtown Scranton shoe store were busy, Tuesday, cleaning and taking inventory.

Best Foot Forward was forced to close following the August 19th fire that destroyed a nearby landmark bakery.

The Community Bake Shop fire was just 20-feet from the shoe store and sent smoke pouring into the business district.

"We just kind of ran in and ran out just to get some books and things we left here, and I could smell smoke," said co-owner Denise Allan.

She owns the business with her mother, Lucille Camoni.

The store had to shut down and the owners weren't allowed to return with their insurance adjustor until Monday to determine the extent of damage.

"A lot of soot, you know, he called it carbon product on the boxes. There was a lingering odor," said Allan.

The fire-related closing couldn't come at a worse time for Best Foot Forward.
Allan says back to school shopping represents at least 80 percent of the family's yearly income.

Best Foot Forward will reopen Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock.

The owners will reward their customers' patience by offering extended hours and a 20 percent discount off everything in the store until September 15th.
