WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Maybe you didn't need another sweater, or your grandma forgot you were 16 and not 6. No matter the reason, people were returning and exchanging Christmas gifts at the mall.

"We did some returns and then there's really good sales," said Lisa Swanson of Sweet Valley. "We exchanged for sizes. Maybe mom thought I was one size and I'm another and thought my husband was definitely another size and he wasn't."

Swanson wasn't alone.

"We get up very early so we can be here first thing and then we exchange a few things," laughed Beverly Knapich of Sweet Valley.

While size exchanges are typical the day after Christmas, one store manager says returns are down this year.

"Really I think customers have gotten better with making good selections before the holidays," said Kurt Slusser, the store manager at JCPenney.

We also found gift cards and cash helped keep the return lines a bit shorter.

"They're teenagers now. We can't buy their clothes anymore," laughed Helen McKee of Connecticut, formerly of McAdoo. "We can't pick them out. We can only say 'no' when they're inappropriate."
