Slight Green Light For Ethanol Plant

Slight Green Light For Ethanol Plant - Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at 11:55PM EST

MAYFIELD, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- A Mayfield Borough Council meeting ended with some of the more than 300 crowd members blasting elected officials for approving a request by Northeast Ethanol LLC to rezone 37 acres of its property.

While the move simply changes how the land can be used and nothing more, hundreds of residents are steamed at the looming idea of an ethanol plant. Attorneys for Northeast Ethanol confirmed their plans to move forward with the plant, but say it's a long way out because of the number of regulatory hurdles in place.

Some residents, like Randy Horhutz, say the 5-to-2 vote was a miscarriage of justice. Others say leaders turned a blind eye to the masses.

There's no word on the next step in this process.
