KIDDER TOWNSHIP, CARBON COUNTY - A resort owner has waited more than twenty years to hear the sound of slot machines at his business in Carbon County.
Jack Kalins owns Split Rock resort. He applied for a slots license that would allow him to run up to 500 machines there.
Kalin had gaming on his mind for a long time. When he built his Galleria way back in 1984, he arranged it so he could convert it to a gaming hall some day.
He said, "So everyone questioned me, you gotta be some sort of crazy fool to do that."
But maybe Kalin wasn't so crazy after all. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will soon hand out two slots licenses to resorts.
Thursday, Split Rock managers explained their plans at a public hearing. They estimate slots would bring in about 90 new jobs plus hundreds of thousands of tax dollars.
Several community member spoke and unlike most public gaming hearings, every single person supported Jack Kalin's plan.
While it looks like the community supports slots, the Gaming Board gets to make the final decision. Ant its president says the race is very close.
The Fernwood Resort in Bushkill and the Valley Forge Convention Center are also competing for those licenses.
The board expects to make a decision this fall.
