OLYPHANT, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - Shop locally. That's the message that smaller stores want to send to shoppers this holiday season. While a lot of the focus on Black Friday is about the malls, smaller stores say they can offer customers more.
Store owners in Olyphant say their downtown may be the perfect place to get the perfect present. Stores like Design-2-Consign Boutique say they can give you excellent deals.
"What people don't know is that I can usually beat almost anybody's prices, even with the sales and the coupons," owner Marisa Fabri said. "You can get a $200 item for $29 or $39."
Shoppers in Fabri's store say they agree.
"I really don't go down to the mall. This is where I buy all my clothes. I just bought this new coat here and I buy my jewelry here," shopper Josephine Ercoli said.
Down the street, the Candy Boutique just opened its doors two weeks ago.
"We have a variety of clothing, scarfs and jewelry and candy baskets," owner Shelly Atkinson said. "A gift for anybody."
It's not just merchants in downtown Olyphant that are asking shoppers to think locally. Store owners in downtown Stroudsburg also have the same message.
At Josephien's Fleur-De-Lis, owner Martha Loomis says she always goes the extra mile for her customers.
"If people keep coming in, we're open. We want to be here and ready for business," Loomis said.
Jere Dunkelberger, from Dunkelberger Sports Outfitters agrees. He hopes shoppers give downtowns a try.
"We feel we can give them the best possible service with the best possible product, knowledgeable sales staff and of course, we're always courteous," Dunkelberger said. | |
