Smoking Ban: Where You Can & Can't Light Up

Smoking Ban: Where You Can & Can't Light Up - Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 7:10PM EST

It's almost official. Tuesday the State Senate passed a bill banning smoking in most public places. That includes restaurants and many bars. We have more on where you'll be able to light up and where you won't.

Lighting up will soon be snuffed out in Pennsylvania. And that's welcome news to some. Art Gelsleichter of Wilkes-Barre said, "I think it’s a good thing because make people more healthy. I'm trying to quit too and hey, it gives me an incentive."

According to a new bill passed by lawmakers Tuesday, places like Patte's Sports Bar in Wilkes-Barre will have to put the ashtrays outside. Jim Smith of Wilkes-Barre said, “For me I don't smoke so it doesn't mater. It's great for me."

Marian Tokach of Wilkes-Barre said, “It’s better for everyone. That's hard to say to a smoker."

The bill would ban smoking in public places like hospitals, schools, sports facilities, taxis, buses, trains, their stations, restaurants and many bars that serve a certain amount of food. There are exemptions.

According to the bill you'll still be able to smoke in some bars and taverns, parts of casino floors and private clubs like this American Legion in Plains.

The veterans are happy about that. George Davis of Plains said, "Yes I am. Because it’s a military club. You go over there and get shot in a war and you come back and you can't smoke."

American Legion Manager Carol Davis said, "I think we'll get more people in if they're going to ban at other establishments, they're not going to smoke. Other establishments too.

And that worries Patrick Patte who's owned Patte's for decades. "The clubs definitely will have an impact especially on days where there's baseball games, football games. They're definitely going to take my business away," he said.

And that has some bar owners worried a smoking ban will extinguish more than just cigarettes.
