Snow Causes Slow Going on the Roads - Thursday, December 13, 2007 at 12:59PM EST

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- It has been a very rough morning on area roadways. Many of those trying to travel have run into either freezing rain, sleet or snow.

In the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area the storm hit just as predicted, right before the morning rush. Road crews in Luzerne County began pre-treating many highways overnight in anticipation of the storm. It hit just about the time people had to start out for work.

And that's about the time the emergency calls started to come in. And there were plenty. One car skidded out of control and into the guide rails along the Casey Highway in Carbondale Township. The driver was taken to an area hospital to be checked.

Tim Baron is with the Cottage Hose and Rescue Company. “If you don't have to go out, don't go out. The roads are terrible and they're going to be bad all day. Just stay off the road and if you do have to go on the roads just take it as slow and as careful as you can."

Those rough conditions weren't limited to rural areas. City streets in Scranton got slick too and D.P.W. drivers were trying to keep up with the snow. Bob Pope of Scranton D.P.W. said, "We've been out since first things this morning when it first started snowing. The roads aren't good, it's coming down quick. We're doing the best we can."

However there are many people that have to travel, storm or no. Jason Corcoran drives a truck for a feed and grain company. We found him putting chains on his truck. "I'm coming out of Narrowsburg, New York and headed to Wyalusing. And the snow's getting deeper and deeper so I better put some chains on."
