Snow & Ice Cause Several Crashes - Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 10:30AM EST
LUZERNE COUNTY- A Benton man is dead after a crash Monday night and black ice is reportedly to blame for two injuries Tuesday morning.
Police say 20-year-old Turin Gerhardt lost control on a snow-covered Route 239 Monday evening in Huntington Township and slid sideways into an oncoming pickup truck. Gerhardt was killed while the other driver, 61-year-old Ralph Peterman of Benton, suffered only minor injuries.
Meanwhile a 2-vehicle crash Tuesday morning along Route 315 near Laflin sent both drivers to the hospital. A southbound SUV collided with a northbound car, sending the SUV rolling down an embankment in Laflin.
The driver of the SUV was passing another vehicle around 7:15 when she lost control on some black ice. A HazMat team was called to handle a large gas spill. The crash and cleanup shutdown that part of Route 315 for a few hours. | |
