The combination of snow, ice and heavy rain led to blocked storm drains and flooding problems throughout the area Wednesday.
On Mifflin Avenue in front of Saint Mary's Center in Scranton this morning around 10:00 A.M. there were 2 lanes of traffic covered with water.
In another part of the Electric City drainage problems also caused traffic troubles. Boulevard Avenue looked more like a lake than a road as drivers tried to make their way through.
People who live in Wayne County spent the morning trying to dig out from this morning's messy slop. In Waymart people were trying to clean-up from the storm. People in this part of Wayne County got nearly a half foot of heavy, thick snow over the last 24 hours. Moving the slop was a tough task for many people, shovels and even snowblowers.
Mike Water said, “This stuff is like shoveling cement. No if I couldn't get through it with this I'd be forced to break out the shovel and my shoveling days I hope are a little bit behind me."
Lynn Megivern of Pleasant Mount said, "It's making everything really heavy, hard to move. If you didn't get it off this morning it's twice as bad now."
PennDOT crews were out in full force this morning making sure the roads were clear in Wayne County.
The snow, ice and rain combination has led to a dangerous mix on the roads across the area this morning. One of the hardest hit places was Susquehanna County. Bad roads caused the driver of a heating oil truck to lose control and flip over onto its side.
The accident happened just after 9:00 A.M. just south of Lenox Township on Route 92. The driver of the truck was not hurt. Part of Route 92 was slow going while the wreck was cleaned-up in the northern tier.
Meanwhile in Lackawanna County poor driving conditions are to blame for another accident this time in South Abington Township.
The driver of this truck lost control in the 600-block of Fairview Road just before 8:00 A.M. and slammed into a utility pole. The accident caused nearly 400 PPL customers to lose power but they hoped to have all service back on by early afternoon.
Accidents aren't the only reason for the power outages. Ice is also to blame for leaving many people in the dark. As of midday PPL says more than 6,000 people have no power.
A majority of the outages are in Lehigh County where there are 4,700 homes with no juice. Closer to home, nearly 850 people are without power in Monroe County and more than 400 homeowners in Lackawanna County and 300 in Wayne County are also without power.
Crews say they are working to restore the lights as soon as possible.
