Snow Removal Contractors Have Busy Day

Snow Removal Contractors Have Busy Day - Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 11:30AM EST

LACKAWANNA COUNTY - The widespread snowfall means a rare busy day this winter for private contractors.

A plow truck got a workout Wednesday morning in the Pennstar Bank parking lot in Taylor. It'll take many passes to clean outside the front and back of the bank building.

Just down Main street, Chad Russell of Gaughan Auto Parts maneuvers an ATV equipped with a plow. Besides the auto store, he's clearing snow from a couple other businesses -- including Allied Rehab next door.

"We usually start before these businesses open because the people, the clients that they have, we don't want them to fall or anything like that so... earlier the better," said Russell.

Speaking of early, a crew from Varsity Snow Removal in Swoyersville was in place by 5:30 a. m.

Workers waited just off Interstate 81 on Davis Street in Moosic wishing the storm delivers as expected. "Hopefully we get that 6-inches, you know," said Kevin Prula of Varsity Snow Removal. "Get a fat paycheck."

PennDOT got an even earlier start at its Dunmore shed. Plow trucks filled with salt headed out around 4:00 a. m. to handle Interstates 81, 84, 380 and the Casey Highway.

PennDOT's gone over its checklist, so have private contractors. "Same as PennDOT," said Dan McDonough of Dan Mac Incorporated in Mountaintop. "Check all the vehicles and make sure they're ready to roll."

The only thing that held up McDonough from cleaning the CVS Pharmacy parking lot in Old Forge first thing in the morning was waiting for the first couple of inches to fall.

"We start plowing all the lots at 2-inches and salting at the same time and clearing the sidewalks," said McDonough.

With winter more than half way finished, the sight of a snowplow has been a rarity in this part of Lackawanna County. But some private contractors say today will go a long way in making up for the slow season. Some expect to be on the road and in lots like this deep into the night.

Dan McDonough's company is contracted to remove snow from more than a dozen area CVS Pharmacies.

Since his crews clear the lots every 2" of snow, he expects his trucks to be out until midnight or even later cleaning up from the February storm in more ways than one.
