Snow Shoveling Safety

Snow Shoveling Safety - Friday, December 19, 2008 at 4:40PM EST

Milton, Northumberland County-

With all this heavy snowfall, it's important to take precautions when shoveling the white stuff.

For the McNeal's in Milton, snow shoveling is something of a family tradition.

Andrew McNeal Sr., said, "I love the snow. My son and I, we like to play in the snow. He has a good time with it, so we enjoy being in it. (But) you have to be careful how you lift it. You can't use your back, you have to use your legs."

And for eight-year-old Andrew Jr., it's also an art form. He's something of a snow fort connoisseur.

He explained, "I love it! Because it's so hard that you can shovel it up and build up big piles of it and then when it gets more solid, you can take your shovel and start making forts and dig out tunnels and everything."

But safety is the key here, otherwise the snow isn't so much fun.

Andrew Jr. had this tip. "Whatever you do, just keep you eyes down usually, and make sure you don't have any ice just compacted there, so you're not just shoveling and all of a sudden you slip and fall with it and the snow comes all down in you face and everything."

It's clear that Dad has taught little Andrew all the tricks of the trade.

Andrew Sr. added, "Physical work is not bad, you know. Take your time at it, don't try to do it all at once. A little bit at a time and try to be safe with it."

Good advice for anyone braving these blustery conditions to clear a sidewalk or driveway.
