CARBON COUNTY -- Before the storm hit our area, people took advantage of a few dry hours to get some last minute shopping done.

By early afternoon the first flurries began blowing through Lehighton, Carbon County. Earlier, the promise or threat of a storm had Nancy Reese blowing through her holiday shopping lists at the Walmart in Hometown, Schuylkill County.

"We came early to beat the snow and we have to go to the Philadelphia airport tomorrow to pick up our son from the Navy for Christmas," she said.

By 11:30 the winds blew but the snow held off in Lehighton, leaving shoppers enough time to hit the Mallard Market. Joy Ott of Franklin Township said, "For milk, bread, all the essentials so we have them in case we lose power this time.Ó

Usually when a storm hits, folks run out for milk, bread. But when a storm hits the weekend before Christmas, cookie ingredients fly off the shelves. Sherry Armbruster of Lehighton said, "Did you plan to do that today? No I planned to do things outside, but I'm going to make cookies."

By 1:30 the snow began falling on the tree stand on Route 434 putting people in the holiday spirit. Amy Butrie of Jim Thorpe said, "I like it because I feel like decorating."

Within an hour a blanket of white covered South Second Street, setting the stage for a traditional snow walk for Joy Ott and her excited 4-year-old Molly.

One family handling the winter storm in stride, almost ensuring a white Christmas.
