Snyder County Won't Back Boscov's

Snyder County Won't Back Boscov's - Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at 5:33PM EST

Selinsgrove, Snyder County-

Snyder County Commissioners said “no” to a $5 million loan for Boscov’s. They’re one of seven counties being asked to help save Boscov’s from bankruptcy.

Last minute shoppers flooded the Susquehanna Valley Mall Wednesday afternoon. Some snapped pictures with Santa, while others filled their bags with gifts for loved ones.

Many strolled through Boscov’s, an anchor store that’s been here more than 30 years, even before the mall was built.

Brandi Viruet, of Sunbury, said, “I shop here a lot. I think they usually have good deals on clothes and stuff, especially for the kids, and I think it would be a shame if it was gone.”

On Tuesday, the Snyder County commissioners decided they couldn’t risk committing a five million dollar loan to Boscov’s. Shoppers we spoke with had a mixed reaction to the news.

Viruet added, “I have an aunt who’s worked here for 30 years. I think that they should. I think it’s worth it. And I think they would get their money back."

While Brandi Viruet favors the loan, her husband, Minuel, says Boscov’s owners have no one to blame but themselves.

He noted, “They knew it was going to happen obviously. I think they should’ve been a little bit more prepared. I don’t know what they could have done, but maybe something different."

The commissioners voted 2-1 against using the county’s Community Development Block Grant funding as collateral to back the Boscov’s deal.

Al Boscov has promised that the store will remain open regardless. That’s welcome news to many local shoppers.

Louis Fredericks, of Liverpool, explained, “This store needs to stay here because, you know, it’s just a part of the community. Everybody shops at Boscov’s that I know. Everybody comes up here and it’s a pretty big deal.”

So far, out of the seven counties asked to provide a loan to Boscov’s, Snyder is the first to decline.
