HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY- Police say they have several solid leads to track down the men behind a brutal Hazleton home invasion. The attack happened Saturday night at the home of Nick and Martha Caputo. They were viciously beaten.
It was a nightmare come true for the Caputo’s, both in their late 70s of Hazleton. They were attacked by at least two men, possibly three, inside their South Pine Street home Saturday night. The attackers were wearing masks and one brandished a gun. They may have left the scene in a dark colored SUV.
The masked men quickly smashed through the front door and terrorized Nick and Martha Caputo. They threatened to kill them unless they gave them money. But the Caputo’s fought back. They were not gong to be victims, and family members and investigators say that probably saved their lives.
Hazleton Detective Gino Fedullo said, "We're proceeding with several leads promising leads and we're confident making some headway in this hopefully make an arrest soon."
Blaise Caputo was working in the family's garage at the rear of the property, when his father, covered in blood, stumbled in the door saying the attackers were killing his mother. “For the beating they took they’re in pretty high spirits. They’re still in stable condition, yet they are doing alright," said Blaise.
By the time Blaise got inside, the attackers were gone, and his mom lay on the floor badly beaten. "They fought the best they could. My dad wrestled with the one guy, he actually broke away and got out of the house. It probably saved their lives," he added.
The men were wearing masks. They threatened Nick and Martha, demanding money. They got nothing. "I just want to see justice brought. I want these guys caught. It’s unbelievable that someone could do this to elderly people, my parents anything like this," said Blaise.
He says the show of support and love from the community is overwhelming. "The phones didn't stop yet. The community support is unbelievable, how many people are behind them, the way they are sticking together. There have been thousands of calls. They’re all saying prayers for them,” he added.
