Source: 'Significant' Number of Churches To Close

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- Parishioners across the Diocese of Scranton will hear from the bishop at all weekend masses through a taped recording. Some will learn the church they're in soon will no longer exist under the terms of a sweeping consolidation plan.
Catholic church officials refused to release specifics of their ambitious plan, saying it's best left to be conveyed at mass. The details will later appear on the diocese's website Sunday evening after 7 o'clock, according to spokesman William Genello. Sources tell Eyewitness News the diocese is releasing the sensitive information this way, instead of a news conference, because of the outrage that resulted after Bishop Joseph Martino's live broadcast two years ago concerning school closings.

Sources further say a conservative estimate on church closings puts the number close to 35. The results of a contracted firm hired to study the diocese's current parish structure were released in July. About 40 churches were proposed for mergers, consolidations or closure.
