Spa Goes Green

SHAWNEE ON DELAWARE - It seems just about everything is "going green" these days from driving hybrid cars to using chemical-free cleaners.

Now a local spa is helping you "go green" while you relax.

It looks and sounds like most spas but the one at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is a little different. You can pamper yourself and the environment all at the same time.

Spa Shawnee recently earned a "Save our Planet Award" from the Pocono Mountains Chamber of Commerce.

"When I see a business has gotten a green certification or uses organic materials that's a big vote in my direction," said Amy Cramer.

She loves the spa because it's all natural from start to finish. Her visit began with some organic white tea, then she had a massage.

The therapist uses organic oils from recycled and recyclable containers. "The organic oils that we use are easier to break down in the laundry and rinse out of the sheets where as the synthetics offer much more damage to the environment," said Certified Massage Therapist Chris Smith.

And it's not just the spa area that's gone green, the salon is also earth friendly. Everything there is all natural from the hair dyes to the shampoo.

"We also have vegan nail polish, again, all natural, organic, not tested on animals," said Shawnee's marketing director Monica Startari.

For Amy it all comes together as a day that benefits Mother Nature and a day when the mother of three can relax. She said, "I have children, they want to be able to enjoy the earth, and their children, and their grandchildren. So I want to preserve the earth and the clean water and the fresh air."

Spa Shawnee also includes lights on dimmer switches so they can control how much electricity they use. They have an extensive recycling program and employees are encouraged to car pool.
