SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- Hundreds of people flocked to St. Ann's shrine basilica here for the first novena devotion honoring St. Ann, mother of the blessed virgin Mary.
"She's very special to all of us," said Ann DePalma. "That's why people come from all over."
Catholics pray to St. Ann for intervention and to bring miracles. Joe and Clare Fisne of Clarks Summit say they've done so many times, including years ago when their son swallowed a needle.
"It lodged in his colon, an they thought he'd need surgery," said Clare. "We prayed a novena to St. Ann, and he passed it."
"We came over here to pray for seven straight days, and on the seventh day, he passed it," added Joe.
Parishioners we spoke with hope those who have fallen away from the church will make their way back through this novena.
"The celebration part really brings people closer together, closer to the Lord, the blessed virgin Mary, and to St. Ann," said Eugene Montrone of Clarks Green.
St. Ann's land in Scranton has a lot of history. Several times, experts believed it would collapse due to mines. But it never did, and they credit St. Ann and her ability to help bring miracles.
