St. Patty's Flowers Delivered to Nursing Homes

St. Patty's Flowers Delivered to Nursing Homes - Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at 10:26AM EST

MOOSIC, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- A St. Patrick's Day tradition continued in Lackawanna County as corsages and boutonnieres were delivered to hospital patients and nursing home residents.
The project was started by Scranton attorney John McGee 14 years ago. McGee said his father use to give a corsage to his sister and boutonnieres to the boys in his family every St. Patrick's Day.

He got the idea of delivering the flowers to area hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living centers after taking a boutonniere to his uncle who was in the hospital. He and his team of volunteers now prepare and deliver approximately 4,200 flowers each St. Patrick's Day.

Volunteers worked three days to assemble and pack the flowers. They worked out of the Visitor's Locker Room at PNC Field in Moosic. A team of 18 volunteer drivers handled the deliveries.
