DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY- State Police at Troop R in Dunmore have presented an "Outstanding Citizenship Award" to Michael Bird of Lake Ariel for his efforts to save a man from a burning car last June.

Bird was working at a garden center just off Route 590 on June 18, 2007 when he heard a crash along the highway. He ran to the scene to find 4 vehicles involved in a crash.

Jim Conrad of Lakeville was trapped inside one of the vehicles which was on fire. Bird used his garden sheers to cut Conrad's seatbelt, then pulled the man from the car.

Conrad said he doesn't think he would be here today were in not for Bird's quick thinking and action.

The award was presented during an inspection of officers from PSP Troop R just prior to the start of their summer saturation patrols.
