State Police Investigate Hit and Run Crash - Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 10:30AM EST

SPRINGBROOK TWP., LACKAWANNA COUNTY -- One person is in the hospital with serious injuries after an early morning hit & run.

54-year-old Matt Garofalo of Lake Ariel was taken to the hospital in serious condition early this morning. Another person was checked out at the hospital, and was taken into custody for questioning.

Police tell Eyewitness News a pick up apparently crashed into a Pontiac Grand Prix at the intersection of Route 307 and 690 in Springbrook Township, Lackawanna County. Witnesses tell us that the driver of the truck took off down Schwartz Valley Road and abandoned the truck a mile and a half away.

Ann Marie said, "I heard a lot of engines, I was just thinking maybe it was school buses or whatever, so my son says Ômom I think it was an accident."

State police tell Eyewitness News that a Nissan Titan pickup truck was traveling south on Route 307. Witnesses say that pickup truck ran a red light at the intersection with Route 690, then smashed into the back of the Pontiac at about 5:40 A. M.

The force of the crash apparently drove the Pontiac into a telephone poll. Witnesses say that the Nissan pickup then fled the scene. "Went down this road - you can see all this, like this grease, & whatever, on the road - it continued down Schwartz Valley Road," added Marie.

The pickup ended up right in front of Dave Johnson's home about a mile and a half away. "My neighbor came down, and then saw a car go by that was smashed up so he followed it, and well, it ended up right here in my driveway," he told Eyewitness News.

Johnson didn't think much of the noise because he says accidents are common at the nearby intersection. "I heard sirens at the intersection, & I went back to bed because it was just another crash at the intersection, there's a lot of them there," he added.

State police remained on scene to investigate the details of the hit and run crash in Lackawanna County. State police would not give us the name of the pickup driver who was questioned. We also have not been given an updated condition on 54-year-old Matt Garofalo.
