State money headed to Luzerne County

State money headed to Luzerne County - Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 5:24PM EST

Thursday, Aug 7, 2008 @ 05:24pm EST

More than 19 million dollars in state funds are headed to Luzerne and Lackawanna county.

Governor Rendell made the announcement in Hazleton this morning.

The funding will help three projects in the Wilkes-Barre area.

The Murray complex is an eyesore on Ross Street in Wilkes-Barre .

Broken windows, buildings falling apart and it needs work.

The state is kicking in 1.5 million dollars to help.

Some say good idea, but are still skeptical.

John Stackonis of Wilkes-Barre says, “I don't know, I've seen a lot of projects that they advertise and say they're going to get done but it seems like it takes forever to get done, and by that time everybody, by that time half the population leaves the valley anyway."

Restaurants, townhouses, offices and stores are scheduled to be built here.

Owner Dan Siniawa says he couldn't have planned it without state money.

"If you want to see something historical like this, the one building that we're going to do, it takes a lot more than building a brand new building," says Siniawa.

A four million dollar grant was also announced Thursday for Wilkes-Barre's Stegmaier Building .

That is located on Wilkes-Barre Boulevard .

Stores and apartments are scheduled to be built here too.

State grant money is also headed to a new office building at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.

91 thousand will be used for equipment, job training, and construction for that project.

It will be built at the Landing Pointe Office Park .

That makes three big projects for Wilkes-Barre and the surrounding area.

At the Murray complex on Ross street , demolition could start next week.

In a year and a half to two years the whole project should be complete.
