Streetscape Renovations Begin in Carbondale

Streetscape Renovations Begin in Carbondale - Monday, May 18, 2009 at 6:00PM EST

CARBONDALE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - The Pioneer City will soon have new light shining on it. New street lights that is. Work on a new streetscape project on Main Street in Carbondale is now underway.

"As far as it goes, Carbondale needs it. Carbondale, I feel, is a good town," Mary Ann King said.

This month, the city's new streetscape project started. It will bring new concrete sidewalks, Victorian lamp-posts and trees to the main drag.

"It's something that's visual. It's something that people see every single day on Main Street," Mayor Justin Taylor said.

Jim Coleman has lived in the Up-Valley for decades. He hopes the streetscape plan brings new business.

"It's bound to improve the town. It's gonna improve the look of it and possibly bring work into the area," Jim Coleman said.

Others are cautiously optimistic. They think the $631,000 project (paid for by federal and state money) could be better spent.

"We need business in this town. It's like a ghost town," Maryann Sears said.

Mayor Taylor is confident the project will have an impact and increase foot traffic downtown.

"I think once people realize people are investing money in the downtown, then other businesses will want to do the same," Mayor Taylor said.

The new streetscape project should be finished by August. Its part of $25 million in new construction projects being done this year in downtown Carbondale.
