Stroud P.D. Has New Mean Machine

Stroud P.D. Has New Mean Machine - Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 5:25PM EST

EAST STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY - Stroud Area Regional Police officers have used motorcycles, cars and vans to keep the peace. Now they have one more tool in the parking lot, an M113 armored personnel carrier.
Chief John Baujan laughed, "It's a little bit different - it's a little different - there's no doubt."

The carrier deflects bullets and shrapnel. It also floats. Eleven officers can fit inside. Baujan said, "We had nothing in this area nothing in the department that would afford them the protection that they needed if they had to do an officer recovery."

The vehicle like normally cost about $400,000. Stroud Area Regional picked it up for free. It's a used military vehicle the army put out of service. The chief said, "It was a diamond in the rough to say the least. Mechanically it's very sound and it works very well - but to look at it she was kind of rough."

It was rough until Mike Reinheimer got his hands on it. The body shop worker donated hundreds of hours to make it as good as new. "All the tracks the wheels, the were nothing but rust," he said.

Mike sanded, buffed, welded and painted for eight months. He said, "Any spare time I could get after work - I worked on it."

Chief Baujan said, "If it wasn't for Mike helping out this project wouldn't have been done."

Mike and the chief hope the department never has to use the machine, but they're glad to have it just in case. "We show up in this - that we mean business - we're here to get the job done and we're going to get the job done," said Baujan.

The department paid $1,000 to have decals and lettering placed on the side of the vehicle. All other supplies, equipment and man hours were donated.
