STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY- It’s been a mess in front of the Pocono Inne Town since last May. Frank Brown of Brownies in the Burg said, "We are absolutely perfectly pleased with the outcome of the project."

Brown owns the inn and an attached restaurant. During construction for the downtown safety project his business suffered. "Well, we were effectively closed for a week or more at one point because of the construction of the sidewalk here. It was really hard to get into our building," he said.

But now he sees it was worth the trouble. There's nice new brick curbing. And better crosswalks. Best of all, traffic is finally moving smoothly. "I think people just driving through will say, 'wow look at this little town, let's stop here’," he said.

As you walk through town, you'll still see a few fences and some cones here and there. That's because the borough hasn't put the finishing touches on the project yet. Within these light poles with decorative ones.

Dave Butler owns a camera shop on Main Street. He loves the new look. But he and other business owners aren't convinced this will make Stroudsburg safer. "I still see people walking across the middle of the street. I still see issues with people cutting the corners and doing things like that," he said.

Others worry big trucks will destroy the new curbing. A few have already messed up some of the work. Stroudsburg Councilman Boyd Weiss said, "It's just carelessness on the part of the drivers."

Borough council members say they will ask those drivers to pay to fix the damage. And they hope the new look and safer streets make the downtown a more popular destination.

The decorative touches should be finished by the end of September. If that happens, it means the project will be completed a month ahead of schedule.
