STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY- With all of the traffic in downtown Stroudsburg it's no wonder people like Hazel and Fred Hildebrant say it's terrifying to cross the street.
"I get about half way across then the light changes and it's like I take my life in my hands," explained Hazel.
Stroudsburg's Borough Manager Barbara Quarantello said, "There has been a lot of accidents down at the different intersections with pedestrians being hit - some deaths at these intersections."
Quarantello didn't know exactly how many people have been hurt but said even one person is too many.
"The lights when they turn red you don't have enough time to cross the street," complained Hazel.
Soon she won't have that problem. The borough started a safety construction project Monday. Construction crews are getting ready to put in new traffic signals and extended curbs.
"They'll be able to cross faster now because they don't have to walk as far," said Quarantello.
While many people are happy with the plan, some are not. Angeline Gilroy owns Little Angels Cafe and some apartments just off of Main Street. The project will take away all of her customer parking spaces so she's not sure she will keep her business in the area.
Gilroy said, "It's going to be a little iffy on where everyone's going to go or how much money we want to invest in making something that no one can get to."
But others say no investment is worth more than someone's safety.
Those extended curbs and new signals will be installed at North, 8th, and 9th streets. Workers expect to finish the 1.6 million dollar project in October.
