PLYMOUTH, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Hundreds of elementary students in Luzerne County were shuffled to high school Monday morning. That's because a fire broke out in the school's basement.

Investigators say it was a student who set that fire. They say the student set toilet paper on fire inside a boys’ restroom in the basement of Main Street Elementary School in Plymouth.

The fire alarms sounded inside the school just after 9:00 A. M. Monday. Flames were spotted in a boys’ bathroom in the lower level. The school was evacuated and nobody was injured.

Principal Ray Whalen said, "They were coming out of breakfast when some young man, we have some suspects, they lit toilet paper on fire. They vacated the boys lav in the basement. The custodian smelled smoke and saw fire, pulled the fire alarms and the firemen and police were here in a few minutes."

The first priority was to get more than 400 students out of the building. They were taken to the nearby Wyoming Valley West High School.

Parents rushed to the school as word of the fire spread throughout the borough. Sheri Sult said, "I saw the fire trucks. I wasn't sure if I should go in or not. I went in, smelled smoke and the teacher said there was a fire, it smells too much here. I said we are just going to leave!"

Trinace Cousin added, "At first I thought maybe it was the cafeteria ladies set something on fire. But after the firemen told me it was toilet paper I'm a little concerned they brought matches into the school."

Again there were no injuries. The school will be open for classes Tuesday. As for the suspects, they face expulsion from school.
