SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY
Final exams ended at the University of Scranton Friday and many students are packing up to head home for the summer.
But many have accumulated clothes, supplies of food, and even furniture they don't want to haul home. That's where the University's Community Outreach Program comes in.
Student volunteers set out bins to collect items that might otherwise have been thrown away. They include clothing, unopened non-perishable food, even working electronic items like apartment sized refrigerators, radios, and televisions.
After being sorted by the volunteers the items, many of which are new, will be donated to local social service agencies such as United Neighborhood Centers. Many of the clothing items will be donated to migrant workers who are in the area.
Meanwhile the city's code enforcement office is posting notices on student apartment housing units informing them what items can or cannot be discarded in the trash. | |
