LAPLUME TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY ÐWhen itÕs this cold most people want to stay indoors. That wasn't the case today in Lackawanna County. Some high school students wanted to take their lesson plans outside.

With temperatures in the 20s, the last place you'd want to learn is outdoors, right? Call me crazy, but not these students, who are interested in the environment.

About 75 students from 13 high schools spent the day studying groundwater flow, direction and speed at Keystone College.

Each month this group travels to different areas looking at different aspects of nature. So far they've been to the Lackawanna River in Mayfield and the Scranton Sewer Authority.

Lackawanna County Watershed Specialist Alana Roberts said, ÒHands-on is the best way to learn, so we're out here studying despite the cold temperatures."

And even though this group was bundled up in jackets, hats, gloves and scarves they say there is no place they'd rather be.

The brave determination of the students will pay off at the end of the school year. One of their last lessons will be learning about nature by kayaking.
