Muncy, Lycoming County-

Students in central Pennsylvania took time out to honor veterans at a cemetery in Muncy Thursday.

For about six years now, fifth graders at Myers Elementary School have been placing flags at the cemetery to honor fallen veterans.

Student Mariah Moore noted, “Last fall we took the flags out of the stanchions, and now we’re putting them, the flags, back in.”

Muncy Historical Society President Bill Poulton explained, “What we’re teaching them by placing American flags on the stanchions of veterans is cemetery etiquette, how to treat a cemetery, what a cemetery means.”

Fifth grader Emilie Kainz said, “It means a lot because some people have family members that were veterans, so they love doing it.”

The students placed almost a thousand flags here at the cemetery, honoring fallen veterans from the Revolutionary War right up through today’s conflicts in the Middle East.

Poulton believes it’s an important lesson for the kids. He’s not sure there’s enough emphasis on history in schools today.

Poulton added, “When I was in grammar school and elementary school and high school and even college, American history was a focal point at every grade of your learning education experience.”

Students here say they get the message, and the importance, of remembering true American heroes.

Student Sondra Willows said, “We honor soldiers because they have done so much for us and they helped our country.”

The flags will remain on the veteran’s graves until the fall, when the next class at Myers Elementary will take them out for the winter.
