WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY - A 12th grade Coughlin High School social studies class listened to a live feed of President Obama's back to school speech.
The Coughlin seniors are excited about their final year of high school but know now is not the time to rest on past accomplishments.
"Senior year is also a time to excel, to challenge yourself, not time to slack off," said Coughlin senior class president Anthony Bucci.
He believes in the president's call for students to work hard and take responsibility for their own education.
Bucci said, "You might not remember a specific statistic or fact you learned in a history or math class but what you're going to take with you the rest of your life is the work ethic and the things you gained in high school."
The live computer stream had its problems at times, dropping out during parts of the president's speech. But the underlying message of study now, succeed later resonated with these teens.
Coughlin senior Joe Monaghan said, "You never know what you can do until you actually try it yourself. Failure, in my point, it creates success. You learn a lot from your mistakes."
The president's speech caused controversy from opponents who claimed there's a political agenda behind it. But students like Coughlin senior Danny Cebula doesn't see the controversy.
"Well, I don't think the president said anything that would have harmed anyone or offended anyone or anything like that," said Cebula. "Everyone's entitled to their opinion and I'm just glad I got to hear it." | | |
